Snake Removal in Columbus

Last reviewed September 8, 2026 against Georgia DNR published rules and federal statute. How we research this site.

Most snakes found around Columbus homes are harmless and beneficial. A few are not, and the difference matters.

Columbus specifically

The bluff woodland puts snakes within a garden of a lot of houses. Most are harmless and worth leaving alone, but the river edge means identification is worth doing properly rather than from a phone photograph taken at speed.

Snakes in Muscogee County: who does what

Columbus Animal Care and Control sits inside the Special Enforcement Division of the Consolidated Government, and its published remit is the Animal and Fowl Ordinance: rabies vaccination compliance, animal registration, bite quarantines, cruelty investigations and a shelter that takes in roughly 8,400 stray, abandoned and surrendered animals a year. That is a domestic animal workload from end to end. A raccoon in a roof is not in it.

For identifying an animal or damage before anyone is paid to look, the UGA Extension, Muscogee County office (Columbus Consolidated Government) is at 1111 1st Avenue, 1st Floor, Columbus, GA 31901, 706-225-4200 (office page).

What Georgia law says about snakes

Georgia has 47 native snakes; the 7 venomous ones aside, all 40 non-venomous species are protected by state law, and the eastern indigo snake is federally protected too. DNR says the copperhead is usually the only venomous snake that does well in suburbs. Licensed operators may remove a venomous snake by any lawful method but must catch a non-venomous one alive, by hand. All Georgia rules →

Signs, and why they matter

  • A shed skin in a crawlspace, garage or shed
  • A snake seen in the garage, laundry, crawlspace or under a step
  • Rodent activity that suddenly stops: snakes follow their food
  • Venomous species do occur in this region and misidentification is common in both directions
  • Any suspected venomous bite is an emergency: call 911, do not attempt to catch the snake

How removal works

Identification first, then physical removal with proper hooks and tubes. Longer term the answer is habitat and rodent control; a house with no mice is far less interesting to a snake.

Snake questions

How much does snake removal cost in Columbus?

$150 โ€“ $400 for removal of a single snake, depending on access and whether young are present. After a long stay in an attic the cleanup is often the bigger bill (attic restoration).

Is there a wrong time of year to deal with snakes?

Peak activity in spring and autumn, plus hot spells when snakes move into cool crawlspaces and garages.
