Squirrel Removal in Columbus

Squirrels in an attic gnaw constantly, and wiring is among the things they gnaw.

Columbus specifically

Old mill housing is where the squirrel work is. Roofs built cheaply in the 1890s and patched repeatedly since leave soffit and fascia seams that open up a little more every year, and the houses sit close enough together that one animal reaching a roofline can work a whole street.

Squirrels in Muscogee County: who does what

Columbus Animal Care and Control sits inside the Special Enforcement Division of the Consolidated Government, and its published remit is the Animal and Fowl Ordinance: rabies vaccination compliance, animal registration, bite quarantines, cruelty investigations and a shelter that takes in roughly 8,400 stray, abandoned and surrendered animals a year. That is a domestic animal workload from end to end. A raccoon in a roof is not in it.

What Georgia law says about squirrels

Gray and fox squirrels are game animals in Georgia (2025-26 season: 15 August to 28 February, 12 a day). DNR calls trapping or shooting effective for nuisance squirrels but asks residents to check with a Game Management office about a permit. A licensed operator may only cage-trap or exclude gray and flying squirrels, and must release them unharmed into suitable habitat. Signs, and why they matter

  • Fast, light scampering in the attic or wall: loudest at dawn and again before dusk
  • Scratching and persistent gnawing sounds
  • A neat, round hole chewed through fascia, trim or a gable vent
  • Chewed electrical wiring, which is a genuine and documented cause of house fires
  • Chewed plumbing lines and irrigation tubing

How removal works

One-way exclusion doors let squirrels leave and stop them returning, followed by sealing every gnawed opening with steel or hardware cloth. Wood alone gets chewed through again within weeks.

A one-way door lets the animal leave and not return, which is why sealing the hole is the last step, not the first.

Is there a wrong time of year to deal with squirrels?

Two litters a year, typically late winter and again in late summer, so there are two seasons where young may be present and unable to leave.
